I love this scent so much. This is the second one that I purchased and I am going to get a few more as gifts. The story of the company and little card about each person that the scent is inspired by is really special. They burn evenly and packaging is cool.
My favorite candle ever - truly!!! Can burn it for hours without getting tired of it. I am picky when it comes to candles, but this one is just perfect in every way

Such beautiful and UNIQUE scents, I had such a hard time choosing just one! I got mine at the farmers market next to AP where John’s grandson had a booth— super nice guy who told me about his grandfather John :) decided to get the one named in his honor, its a perfect balance of fresh and warm. So happy to see a small family business. Scent fills the space quickly and lasts for a long time without being overwhelmingly strong. Plus the provided hex nut is so helpful for trimming the wick. They included a sachet of native wildflower seeds which is a great touch. Will be getting more in the future!

Brennan stopped by my business to drop off some shipments, and as I scanned them to provide a receipt, I noticed the return address: “Candles by John.” As a daily candle burner, my curiosity was instantly piqued, and it sparked a fun conversation. I asked Brennan about his favorite scent, and he kindly shared the link to his website. That evening, as I lit my usual candles, I browsed the site and decided to order one for myself. To my delight, the very next afternoon, Brennan personally delivered my order. WOW—now that’s what I call customer service! That night, I lit my new ‘Curt’ candle and couldn’t help but smile, knowing it was made and delivered with care. The scent was soft, earthy, and warm—subtle and not overpowering, exactly how a great candle should be. I’ll definitely be ordering more and can’t wait to try other scents!
As other reviewers have said, these candles and the people behind them are genuinely special. First, the quality of the candles are amazing. The scent blends are unique and complex, and not to mention they are strong enough to fill my home with the warmth and love evoked by the inspirations behind them. Secondly, I have bought three candles now at local SF craft fairs. Brennan was so kind to offer me a returning customer discount when I told him how much I loved my Nicole candle. I was also surprised and delighted to find a packet of my favorite flower seeds in one of my new candle packages! I don’t usually write reviews but was compelled to since my experience has been so exceptional. I can tell that these candles are personal to the candlemakers and that makes them mean so much more.
Sadie Pearl is no ordinary currant candle. The lemon peel, juniper, peppermint, and additional scents give her depth and character. As described, Sadie Pearl wraps one in a comforting embrace!
I’m so happy with my Nicole Candles by John; there’s one in my bedroom, one in my office, and one in my living room. They make the space smell lovely and make me happy :)

BUY THESE CANDLES!!!! I cannot express how beautiful my experience with this company and its lovely owners has been. I first discovered Candles by John at Downtown First Thursdays, where I purchased their seasonal Christmas candle, Claus, from their charming stall. I thought I was just getting a nice candle… but wow, was I wrong. This was, hands down, the best candle I have ever owned. I burned it every single day, and it lasted for weeks! AND it made my entire apartment smell like beautiful pine—my favorite scent of all time. I used every last drop of that candle, and when I finally ran out, I rushed to their website to buy another. But, as with many Christmas-themed products, it was no longer available in late January (duh). Desperate to get my hands on it again, I took a shot in the dark and DM’d the company on Instagram—not really expecting anything to come of it. But to my surprise, they responded! Brennan got back to me almost immediately and was so incredibly kind. I told him how much I adored the candle, and he offered to make me a custom order! I was floored—I had never experienced such warm, receptive, and flexible customer service before. He even offered to deliver it personally! I ordered as many candles as I could and eagerly waited. About 1–2 weeks later, they texted me personally to coordinate a delivery time that fit my schedule. When they arrived, they hand-delivered the package—and were absolutely lovely. And then… to top it all off, when I opened the parcel, I found not only my custom candle but also free candles, including Curt, along with a beautiful handwritten note. I almost cried—it was such a touching and thoughtful experience. And on top of all that, I had just secured the best, high-quality candles of all time. Now, I have always been blindly loyal to pine-scented candles (and don’t get me wrong, Claus will forever be a favorite), but I am so grateful they sent me a Curt candle because—WOW. Just wow. BUY THIS CANDLE. It smells absolutely divine! It’s the perfect balance of woody and earthy scents, with just a touch of sweetness and floral notes. They have officially opened my eyes to the world of candles beyond pine. PLEASE don’t walk—RUN—to get one of these candles! Not only are they worth every penny (unlike those dinky, cancer-causing candles from Target that barely make a room smell good), but the owners, Brennan and Monique, are some of the kindest, most hardworking, and deserving small business owners I’ve ever met. Ok, sorry, yes, that's super cheesy! But it's what first came to mind because it's true. My John candle is proving to be the perfect addition to my bathroom, making it smell like the outdoors, filling it with an awesome fresh sent of bergamot, cedarwood, sandalwood, and a little smoke! And throw in a whiff of clove and leather!

Amazing scent
I love the Curt candle!! It’s fresh and earthy which is a lovely combination. Y’all nailed it with Curt!! I’ll definitely be back to replenish my Curt supply and to try other aroma therapy candles
Great scent, basically as described. A bit subtle at first but deepens after it warms up, and is never overpowering. Burns very clean and even. Would absolutely order again. And looking forward to trying more of their scents.

These are top-quality candles, comparable to the Malin + Goetz, Diptyques, and even Trudons that we usually use at a fraction of the price. They burn clean and even, with just the right flame size and scent throw. We loved loved the Curt, and we can’t wait to try other scents.

Love the scent of the Nicole candle! The packaging is cool and the story along with it is wonderful too.(including the nut for trimming the wick,genius!) I have it in my guest room where my sister stayed recently and loved it, so I'll be ordering another for her birthday! Thank you John for crafting such heartwarming candles!

I absolutely love the intentional names and scent creations that are accompanied by beautiful stories of family, memories and heart felt expressions. Scent carries so much power for our experiences, especially with relationships and when I read the label on the box I knew I had to support this brand. Beautifully done! The longevity of the burn and quality of the ingredients are superior. 10/10 recommend!

This scent reminds me of men's cologne, maybe similar to Polo. It smells expensive and luxurious. I love it! The team at Candles By John is such a pleasure to work with, too. Small businesses are not easy to get off the ground and they really shine though with amazing product, cool displays, and thoughtful customer service. :)
